Architecture- Antoni Gaudi

Antoni Gaudi

Antoni Gaudi is a spanish architect born in Barcelona in the early 1850s. Well known for such works as La Sagrada Familia (left image), his use of stones and unique materials have developed his own form of architecture.

Although much of his influences are from the gothic style art and medieval books, the list includes:
  • Josh Ruskins"Ornament is the origin of architecture"
  • William Morris
  • Religion - the basis of Gaudí's inspiration, particularly in later years
  • Catalan nationalism
  • Gothicism
  • Modernism
  • Surrealism
  • Oriental structures
  • Art Nouvea and shapes taken from nature
  • Organic architecture
  • Color
  • Geometry
  • Eugène Viollet-le-Duc - medieval French architecture

Gaudi's main influence was that of his own experience, however a signified Architect was Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. Eugene has designed many buildings and famous for his 'restorations' of medieval designs. One of his works includes the famous Notre-Dame de Paris. In his architecture, he informs the emerging spirit of modernism. Moreover, his gothic architecture (image on right, by Viollet le Duc) is what mainly influenced Gaudi, and so, became the revival for Viollet le Duc.

Due to his unique style, Gaudi stands as one of history's most original architects. As a result, it has been what has made him distinct from the rest. His influences appear most recently in the architect Godey, who designed the Space-time-Towers (based on La Sagrada Familia).

Architecture- Frank Lloyd Wright.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright is a well known architect who has influenced alot of American architecture dating back to the 1800s. Using art deco he added value in adding local materials.
Some of his work include 'Falling Water'. This particular design incorporated the waterfall as a feature of the household. He also used a great extent of geometry- art deco, in the buildings he designed.

His influences included Louis Sullivan. 'It was Louis Sullivan who taught Frank Lloyd Wright that the form of a building should express its underlying function.' Additionally, having worked for Sullivan, alot of Sullivan's works influenced Lloyd's thinking, and so, developing his own style.
Due to Sullivan's uniqueness and creativity, it encouraged Frank Lloyd's independence of thought and daring ideas.

As Sullivan influenced Frank Lloyd, Lloyd was able to influence up-coming archtitects from his time.
This included, one of Seattle's popular architects known as Ellsworth Storey. Influenced by the Arts & Craft movement (which included Frank Lloyd Wright), he also added alot of European and North African styles to his works. This was intergrated in his artworks, and as shown below, you can see the influences displayed by Lloyd, such as the use of geometry. Storey also used local materials in order for the buildings to blend in with its surroundings rather than fighting its landscape.

V Packaging

This packaging is to contain 2 V pocket rocket energy shots. The packaging corresponds the initial V brand, having its main colour as green.

The packaging is bold and bright in order to draw attention to the consumer.
Bold, enlarged text is added at the front in order for the package to be easily identified. Including the logo itself, the audience can quickly depict what the packaging is for due to the images and V logos.

The packaging is designed as a pillow fold. It has alot of room compared to the object inside it, however, the images on the are the actual size of what is found inside, and therefore, what's expected.

The target audience in my opinion would be late teens and young adults. The colours used are kept to a minimal, yet they are bright and bold in order to draw attention and so read what it's all about. This then, is what attracted me to the design. I think the colours used were great in order to deliver their message across.

Nissan Micra Ad

This advertisement was found in a magazine, targeted specifically for women. Hence, the advertisements in the magazine would mainly be targeted to women. Adding the graphics of a car as lipstick shows the feminine side of wanting to buy a 'girly car', if you would say.
The first thing I noticed was the application of colour to the lips, which would suggest it being specifically for women. The concept is quite good in relation.

The typography is kept fairly simple, yet expands in boldness and size. Distorting its angle and aligmnent also makes the reader run down the page, until it ends with the different colour cars. What stands out is 'Micra' as the largest font size and is a different colour in order to depict the car model.

The main idea in the advertisement is to promote design and colour, which is shown through fashion and modern style. However, its kept fairly simple, the use of colour is onle applied to make the images stand out.

I like the idea used to attract its audience, and so, decided it was an interesting piece to analyse due to its uniqueness and style.

2

This bottle is found in priceline stores as well as supermarkets. A mosturiser which has been redesigned. The category it falls into would be packaging and identity because of its logo. The bottle design is actually reconstructed from its previous design, which was a simple straight bottle.
(image on left was its original, simple packaging)
Typography use in the packaging is plain and simple, in order for the consumer to easily identify the product. The logo design is kept bold and large also to be viewed easily.
The new design in the packaging has given the product more of a modern, trendy feel, which I think would attract more customers, because it is different.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/94/Billboard_Coca-Cola,_Bratislava.JPG
Image displayed is a billboard advertisement for Coca-cola- taken in Slovakia. The colours used are very vivid and lively making the advertisement stand out from its surroundings.
The styles used for the billboard are kept fairly simple in order to direct a clear message. On the other hand, their is great depths in the amount of graphic design on the background, which shows the quality of work in order to attract its everyday, trendy audience. It's fresh, and unique, which then focuses of the actual product being promoted, being Coca-cola.
